NEMIC in the News- There's a new implant developed in Rhode Island to treat spine fractures
BARBARA MORSE: There's a new -- first and only one-of-its kind -- implant to treat spine fractures.
This idea was hatched in Rhode Island, through a collaboration that encourages the creation of new medical technology. It's called the New England Medical Innovation Center in Providence.
It was there that a man with both mechanical engineering and a business degree came up with what could revolutionize the way spine fractures are repaired.
"The very first one was done in 2019 and that one actually was in Oklahoma," said Dom Messerli, founder of Lenoss Medical, and the developer of this new device. "It's the first and only biological solution to treat those spinal fractures."
MagpieX MedTech Accelerator makes its first investment in infant positioning device startup, SmölTap
When an infant under four weeks of age shows a fever, the standard of care is a spinal tap to rule out Meningitis. This infection is dangerous, and delays in diagnosis can lead to an extended hospital stay or even death. The traditional constraint method consists of physically holding the baby in a 'crunched' position during the spinal tap procedure, which requires several people to keep the baby perfectly still while the tap is administered.
Fellow Spotlight: Aurie
Aurie has built technical prototypes of the catheter system and tested them in microbiology labs at the University of Notre Dame and conducted human factors testing of interactive prototypes with catheter users in Houston, TX. The startup has received several grants to support its vision, including from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research.
Fellow Spotlight: Lenoss Medical
Lenoss Medical has entered the scene to introduce a disruptive new method of vertebral body augmentation. Lenoss Medical is a start-up with an innovative, biological bone implant technology for the treatment of painful spinal fractures. When natural, biological bone implants are used in weak, fractured vertebrae, a regenerative process can occur: new bone building, and repair of the fractured vertebrae may occur.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- Anthony Wilds, a 15-year-old from Pawtucket, has created his own invention to alleviate his almost constant symptoms of Raynaud’s Disease.
Alongside the New England Medical Innovation Center, the sophomore at the Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center unveiled his product known as “HotBandz.” This product serves as a heated band wrapped around the forearm and promotes circulation in the extremities.
