NEMIC Shares Insights with RI Gov. Dan McKee About RI's Med Tech Ecosystem

April 26, 2023

Just months after including Life Sciences investments in his #RIReady budget, Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee stopped by our Chestnut Street offices last week to see firsthand how NEMIC and our network are playing a vital role in driving this key economic sector for the state.

During the governor’s visit, NEMIC co-founders Aidan Petrie and Lydia Shin Schroter, along with several members of our leadership team discussed how Life Sciences and Med Tech sectors drive economic and job growth. They highlighted why the medical device field - which improves patient care, creates jobs, and contributes to economic growth - is an essential component of the overall Life Sciences industry.

Gov. McKee spoke with several companies within the NEMIC network, including ResusciTech founder Abigail Kohler, as well as SMöLTAP CEO Bob Cooper and Lenoss Medical President and CEO Dom Messerli. These companies provided critical, first-hand insight to the governor on the vitality of Med Tech in Rhode Island, and how the Life Sciences ecosystem is integral to advancing innovation in our state. Dave Morrow, an expert medical technology and mergers & acquisitions executive, spoke about the key positioning of Med Tech within Life Sciences; and Dr. Eugenio Fernandez of Asthenis Pharmacy offered insight on community impact and social equity within the state, as it relates to the Life Science umbrella.

NEMIC leadership echoed these sentiments by sharing the many ways we continue to advocate for Rhode Island as a hub for Life Sciences and Med Tech innovation - including our Med Tech Leadership and Accelerator Programs.

“With Rhode Island’s health and life sciences industry concentrations 31% higher than the national average, our state is poised to become a key hub in this sector, not just regionally but globally,” Schroter said. “NEMIC was honored to share our mission with the governor and thrilled to learn he shares our aspirations. We look forward to collaborating with him and other state leaders as we work toward this goal together.”
