Event Recap: Kick-off Women's Health + Entrepreneurship Event is in the Books
Last Wednesday, March 13th, we held the kick-off event to our Women’s Health + Entrepreneurship Speaker Series. The event was huge success and we want to thank each one of the 50+ attendees who were from all corners of Rhode Island, made their way down from Boston, and the few who tuned into our livestream. We couldn’t have asked for a better turnout and this has made all of us at NEMIC excited for the rest of the series! We have a line up of great speakers and are working on curating next months event. RSVP for April’s event here. Speakers will be announced soon.
In case you missed it…
Kick-off speaker, Kristen Carbone lead us through her personal story of why she chose to have a preventative mastectomy and how it lead her to create a company, Brilliantly, who supports women on their journey toward feeling vital and strong in their mind and body after mastectomy.
Her presentation was an ode to her family and friends who have supported her on this journey and in her business after her mother passed away from breast cancer, after she had her preventative mastectomy, and helped support her children, who were in attendance and even participated in the Q&A, while she started her business.
Brilliantly’s first product, a warming bra insert is set to launch in September 2019 with help from Providence Design Firm, Loft.
Our second speaker, Ayan Bhandari kicked off his story with letting our audience know that he is clearly not a women. Which lines up directly with the message we are trying to spread with this series. This series was brought into existence to create a community of people who either are or support women entrepreneurs and/or either work in or support women’s health initiatives.
During his presentation, Ayan put a spotlight on all the women involved in creating his life-saving boda-boda (motorcycle) seat including his co-founder of Nuway, Lydia Asiimwe. Ayan also talked about and all the women involved with helping his team understand how sharing they use boda-bodas to allow Nuway to design a device for safer riding that also fits their lifestyle and keeps their dignity.
Nuway’s product is currently on the path to be patented and the company plans to sell advertising space on the to support local businesses and keep 3rd party prices down.
